Never heard of Disney California Adventure Park? Then you’ve been missing out on a Disneyland Resort gem.
Located right next door to Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park doesn’t have the instant name recognition of its more famous neighbour. However, the park is just as jam-packed with attractions and entertainment as Disneyland Park (part of the Disneyland Resort in California) – and, as of May, it will also be the only place that you can share a ride with Drax, Gamora, Groot and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy crew.
The new Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission BREAKOUT! attraction is a thrill-a-minute experience set inside a futuristic fortress, where the Guardians have been imprisoned by the evil Collector. Like many of Disney’s best rides, it has multiple “profiles”, which means you can hop on board several times and have a different experience each time.
That is not the only adrenaline-pumping ride on offer at Disney California Adventure Park. The California Screamin’ rollercoaster is the longest and fastest roller coaster at the Disneyland Resort, a non-stop action ride that will have you twisting and turning, swooping and swirling the whole way.
If heart-pounding action is not your speed, there are plenty of other attractions to choose from. Like Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park aims to entertain the entire family. The entire family will want to head straight for Frozen Live at the Hyperion, an all-singing, all-dancing Broadway –standard live show including all your favourite characters, from Anna and Elsa down to snowman Olaf. The fun isn’t limited to the stage, either: visitors to the park can also snap a selfie with Olaf, or meet the princesses at Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome.
Fans of Frozen will also love the underwater adventure on offer at The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. Climb into a giant clam shell to experience colourful scenes from the movie. And for those with a serious princess addiction, book a breakfast at Ariel’s Grotto, where you can meet Ariel, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella during the most important meal of the day.
Characters from another favourite family film, Disney Pixar’s Cars, have inspired the entertaining Cars Land. The fun-filled rides include the Radiator Springs Racers, a crazy car race through the desert packed with familiar locations and characters from the movie.
You will come face to face with more Pixar favourites at Toy Story Midway Mania!, a colourful 4D ride. Armed with a Spring-Action shooter, try your luck at all sorts of carnival games. Be cheered on by Rex and Trixie as you try your hand at Dino Darts, or test your aim at the little Green Men Shoot Camp.
With so much to explore at Disney California Adventure Park, working out where to start can be a challenge. One way is to rise above it all. Take to the skies aboard one of the park’s favourite attractions, Mickey’s Fun Wheel. Passengers aboard this 45 metre high Ferris Wheel have two options: to sit in one of the stationary gondolas, or opt for one of the 16 gondolas on rails which slide and sway during the trip, upping the fun factor.
An alternative birds-eye view comes courtesy of the mesmerising Soarin’ Around the World experience. Head to the projection dome for a simulated flight that takes you on a hang gliding adventure that spans the globe – no passport required. From the imposing Swiss Alps to the mighty pyramids of Egypt, lofty Mount Kilimanjaro to the impressive Great Wall of China, you get to see it all.
While some of the park rides dazzle you with technology, one of its most interesting attractions takes you behind the scenes to show how it is really done. At the Animation Academy, you can learn how pencils and pixels are used to create enchanting animations. Discover tricks of the trade in the hands-on exhibits at The Sorcerer’s Workshop. Try lending your voice to an animated character, and discover how still images can be manipulated to make it seem like they are in motion.
You can even take an animation lesson, learning step by step how to draw one of your favourite Disney characters. Take your sketch home with you for an amazing souvenir of your visit.
While you can choose to explore the park in any order you want, there is really only one way to end a day at Disney California Adventure Park, and that is at the World of Color. This night-time extravaganza will take your breath away. Close to 1200 fountains shoot water into the air, creating a “screen” made of water, on which scenes from your favourite movies are broadcast, accompanied by fire, fog and laser effects. This one-of-a-kind show is a guaranteed highlight of any visit.
To make the most of your visit to Disneyland Resort in California, consider investing in a Park Hopper pass, which gives you access to both Disney California Adventure Park and Disneyland Park in the one day. It’s the perfect option for those who think that too much fun is barely enough.
